Concrete Driveways

Whether you call them concrete driveways or cement driveways – they’re both the same.

Unfortunately, concrete is not pliable like asphalt, therefore freeze and thaw cycles for Omaha driveways can crack and damage concrete fairly substantially over time if it’s not maintained properly. Concrete is also prone to spalling from the use of salt and magnesium chloride de-icers. These de-icing materials are also used by Nebraska governments for winter road maintenance. As a vehicle drives on the roads, ice and snow builds up on the undercarriage. Then when the vehicle pulls into the driveway or garage and it falls from the car and melts, it then damages the concrete surface resulting in spalling, especially of the concrete driveway was not installed properly.

Sub-grade preparation can take anywhere from 1 to 2 days up to 2 weeks, depending on the region you live. Depending on the size and scope of work involved, the construction of a new concrete driveway can be installed by an experienced concrete contractor generally over a 2 to 3 day period after the sub-grade preparation has been done. Concrete driveway installation can be labor intensive and it also needs to cure for several days before being able to drive on it and use it, so you can expect the average concrete driveway to take as much as 7 to 10 days to install. Even more time may be required for patterned or stamped, stained or overlayed concrete driveways.

Omaha Driveway Repair

• Seal Coating
– makes old driveways look new
– less costly then paving
• Patching
– driveways and parking lots
• Drainage and excavation – If water on or under your driveway is a problem, we can build exit drains to move water away from these problem areas where possible.

Many different things can cause concrete to crack. One of the primary causes is soil movement. When soil moves, your concrete surface moves, too. Clay soils in Omaha expand and contract (shrink and expand) as the temperature changes. This movement eventually damages your property.

Cracked concrete allows moisture to penetrate the surface of your property. This moisture weakens your surface. Excessive heat and water cause major issues.

Why Concrete is Better

Strength
Solid concrete has an ultimate flexural strength that is greater than block, making it better able to resist cave-ins caused by lateral pressures of wind, earth, and water. Its ultimate compressive strength is also greater, making it better able to support vertical building loads. In addition, poured concrete walls get stronger as they age – for up to five years.

Maintenance Ease
Poured concrete basements need virtually no maintenance. Concrete’s composition is resistant to rot, decay, rodents, termites, and fungi. Poured concrete is also nontoxic, containing no preservatives to become free upon contact or by leaching. Solid concrete basement walls take care of themselves.

Fire Resistant
Because of it’s increased density and joint-free construction, poured walls offer twice the fire resistance of hollow core block.

Affordability
Controlling costs is one of the biggest concerns of home builders and buyers alike. Efficient modern construction methods make poured basement walls cost competitive with block walls. When you can get this much performance at a comparable price, why look any farther?

Water Resistance
Solid concrete walls are essentially impervious to the passage of water. Solid concrete has fewer and smaller voids than block and is less porous. It offers almost twice the density of a hollow core block wall and weighs approximately 50 pounds more per cubic feet. This makes concrete basements drier.

Design Flexibility
Poured wall construction is adaptable to all home styles, including ranches, duplexes, split levels, modular home, condominiums and apartments. Poured concrete fits in perfectly with today’s diverse lifestyles.

Time Savings
Using poured wall construction gives the builder a head start on framing. A typical installation involves a three-day cycle. When compared to block construction this saves the builder time, increases productivity, and results in a superior basement.
